Her career in figure skating began in 1989 when she took first place in the Skate America competition. After a controversy in 1994, Tonya was forced to stop figure skating turning her focus to boxing. Tonya was a professional fighter by 2003. The world renowned boxer became a household name when she started appearing on TV and films. It was 1994 when Tonya gained notoriety because her principal opponent Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted just prior to the 'National Championship'. Tonya benefited from this popularity and fame so effectively that she changed the culture of female skating. Her story as well as her accomplishments have been featured in numerous academic assessments and in 2017 the biopic, titled "I Tonya' came out.
